For those of you that wish to attend a High School that requires a portfolio evaluation to get into a competitive arts program... now is the time to put together that portfolio!
The first thing you must do is research. Find out what the portfolio requirements are for the program you want to apply to. Most schools have some pretty specific things they want to see in your portfolio, and some schools will even require you to do a drawing in the interview process. Visit the links at the bottom of this post to check out the detailed requirements for the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and some information on the Fairfax High Visual Arts Magnet.
No matter what the specific requirements are for any program there are some things most High Schools (and Art Colleges as well) are looking for... and I know you don't really want to hear it, but, here it is any way: Observational Drawing.
Yep. That stuff I've been talking about for the past three years about foundation drawing, basic shapes, and observation, etc. ...well it turns out it's very important. Really important, actually. Who'd have thought?
Anyhow, if you have any interest in putting together a portfolio than you better take advantage of this wonderful 10 week winter break we have... and you know what that means: put away that xbox/playstation/gamecube controller, stop downloading music for half a minute, and make sure to wake up before noon every day because you have some work to do.
